Wild and Whimsical

Studying at Falmouth University

(part-time & online)

For my latest university module, I explored the relationship between illustration, surface pattern design, and the natural environment through a project inspired by my allotment. Spending time growing fruit, vegetables, and flowers allowed me to observe the beauty of seasonal change, organic shapes, and the wildlife that thrives alongside cultivated plants.

Using primary research gathered from sketches, photographs, and observations, I developed a collection of illustrations and repeat patterns that celebrated the allotment as a space for growth, sustainability, and connection with nature. The project focused on transforming everyday elements such as flowering vegetables, pollinators, seeds, and garden wildlife into decorative surface designs.

Through this module, I refined my pattern-making skills, colour palette development, and repeat design techniques while creating work that reflected my passion for nature-inspired illustration. The project strengthened my interest in designing patterns for textiles and children's products, demonstrating how personal experiences can be transformed into meaningful and engaging visual stories.

The Dream

A dream is a wish your heart makes

My dream is to see my illustrations and surface patterns brought to life through fashion, particularly within baby and children's clothing. I love the idea of creating designs that become part of everyday moments, whether it's a child's favourite outfit or a treasured keepsake.

Inspired by nature, storytelling, and the nostalgic charm of classic illustrations, I aim to create patterns that feel timeless, playful, and full of character, bringing a little magic to the fabrics people wear and cherish.

Lino Experiments

Lino printing has been an important part of my creative journey, allowing me to explore traditional printmaking techniques and develop a deeper understanding of texture, composition, and mark-making. I enjoy the hands-on nature of the process, from sketching initial ideas and carving into the lino to the anticipation of revealing the final print.

Working with lino has strengthened my appreciation for handcrafted artwork and has influenced my illustration style through the use of bold shapes, expressive lines, and organic textures. The process encourages careful planning while also embracing the unique imperfections that make each print distinctive.

Many of my lino prints are inspired by nature, drawing on themes of wildlife, plants, and the countryside. These subjects align closely with my illustration and surface pattern work, allowing me to explore the natural world through different creative mediums. My experience with lino printing has helped me develop a strong eye for detail and craftsmanship, qualities that continue to inform my work as an illustrator and pattern designer.
